42! It’s the answer to life, the universe, and everything. In our case it’s also the name of one of our awesome contributors. 42on is a company focused on providing support, training and consulting for people using Ceph. They have been a long time user (over 3 years!) and contributor to the Ceph project and are very active in the project in many different ways.
42on was chosen as a featured contributor partially because the folks over there like Wido den Hollander are awesome, but also because of both their code contributions (PHPRADOS, CloudStack integration) and their tireless work in supporting the community. Take a minute to get to know what 42on is all about, pick their larger-than-average brains, and give them a Ceph community thanks for their contributions.
Get to know 42on
42on is an Amsterdam-based spin-off of hosting company PCextreme B.V.. Focused on providing training, consulting and support for Ceph and the surrounding ecosystem, 42on are a group of seasoned Ceph experts. In addition to others, 42on also helps PCextreme B.V. to use Ceph as the storage behind their CloudStack environment.
In the world beyond services and support to those that need it, 42on contributes back to Ceph by developing and maintaining the CloudStack integration. They are also very active at filing bugs, and on ceph-devel for handing out support. If there is anyone who likes PHP and might want to use it to talk to Ceph objects and pools, you have 42on to thank! PHPRADOS was written, and is still being maintained, by 42on. If that weren’t enough, PCextreme B.V. is also nice enough to run the European mirror for Ceph’s downloads and documentation.
When asked what inspired them to become so active in Ceph development, 42on had this to say: “Just like the rest of the world we ran into storage scalability issues and were fed up with the traditional storage vendors charging us insane amounts for their products.” It’s this type of attitude and passion that makes it fun to work with 42on and leads to things like their hosting of the very first “Ceph Day!”
